Mangrove trees are an essential part of any ocean ecosystem. Their dense network of exposed roots create a nursery for young ocean species, protect shorelines from erosion and wave damage and absorb excess nutrients. In the home aquarium, mangroves can provide an additional source of nutrient export and add a natural, three dimensional feel to your marine system. Keeping the roots in a sandy substrate will encourage good growth, as well as spraying the leaves often with freshwater. This rinses off the salt the Mangrove absorbs and disperses through its leaves. While the ORA Mangrove can be grown successfully in full saltwater, brackish water or even pure freshwater, they do not do well during abrupt transitions in extreme salinity changes.
